Are all 2021 4Runner models four-wheel drive?

2021 Toyota 4Runner off-road capabilities

All 2021 4Runner models share a 4-liter V6 engine that is capable of providing 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, but not all 4Runner models are four-wheel drive. Most 2021 trim levels give you the choice between either a rear-wheel drive-model or a four-wheel-drive model. All 2021 4Runner trim levels at least have a 4×4 drivetrain available if not standard. Let’s take a look at more of the 2021 Toyota 4Runner off-road capabilities here!

What are the approach and departure angles of the 2021 4Runner?

If you are unfamiliar with approach and departure angles it helps to imagine a flat surface with a flat adjustable ramp. The approach angle is the highest angle that this ramp can be at without the vehicle hitting any bodywork or component if the vehicle was to attempt going up the ramp. The departure angle works much the same way except it is looking at the back of the vehicle when coming off such a ramp.

Essentially though, the higher these angles, the more ridiculous terrain you can attempt to go over without worrying about damaging anything. These angles tend to go hand-in-hand with ground clearance. For 4X2 versions of the 4Runner, the ground clearance is 9 inches with an approach angle of 30 degrees and a departure angle of 26 degrees and 4×4 versions get 9.6 inches of ground clearance with an approach angle of 33 degrees and a departure angle of 26 degrees.

Extra off-roading features of the 4Runner

All trim levels include the body-on-frame construction with an independent front suspension and a 4-link lateral rod rear suspension with a stabilizer bar with features like hill start assist control. Other trims can include features like multi-terrain select and crawl control.

For TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Venture Special Edition, you have an available Kinetic suspension system. The Limited and Nightshade Special Edition trims include a X-REAS Sport Enhancement suspension. The top TRD Pro trim goes above and beyond with TRD Fox high-performance shocks with rear remote reservoirs and TRD-tuned front springs.
