4 Tips to Avoid Back Pain on Long Car Trips

Long car trips can be a pain, especially for drivers who are required to stay in the same relative position for most of the trip. Back pain can affect all people, young and old. Thankfully, there are a few simple ways to help prevent back pain in the car.

How to Prevent Back Pain in the Car

Road Trip

1. Get comfortable before pulling out of the driveway.

Before taking off on your road trip, make sure you are comfortable and poised for the ride. Position your seat so you aren’t reaching for the steering wheel. If your driver’s seat doesn’t have built-in lumbar support, consider placing a small pillow or towel between your lower back and the seat.

2. Shift your position every 15-20 minutes.

Switch up your driving position, even if only slightly, every once in awhile so your body doesn’t get stiff. If there are other drivers along for the trip, consider taking a break in the back seat to stretch out for a bit.

3. Stretch at rest stops.

When you stop for meals or breaks, walk around and do some active exercises and stretches to keep your back muscles loose. Stretching your hamstrings is a great way to relieve lower back pain.

4. Alternate ice and heat therapy.

Bring along an ice pack and heating pad just in case you have pain during the trip. If you start experience back pain, alternate the ice and heat therapy for about 15-20 minutes each. Heated seats can help to relieve back pain as well.
