Daytona 500

Daytona 500 victory for Toyota driver Denny Hamlin

The Daytona 500, NASCAR’s biggest race, took place a few weeks ago at Daytona International Speedway. As the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) season-opener, the Daytona 500 is an important race. And Toyota was thrilled with its first ever Daytona 500 victory won by Denny Hamlin.

Who is Denny Hamlin?

Denny Hamlin has been racing for Toyota since 2008 and has won 24 of his 27 career NSCS victories. He even won a Daytona Duel qualifying race in 2008, which happened to be the Camry’s first ever victory in any NSCS competition. Hamlin drives the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 FedEx Camry, and he won the Daytona 500 by a mere 0.010 seconds, which is the closest finish ever in the Daytona 500’s 58-year history.

Winning the Daytona 500

The driver who came in second place, Martin Truex Jr., also happened to be driving a Toyota Camry. Same goes for the third and fifth place drivers. It’s safe to say Toyota is thrilled with the victory. Here’s what Hamlin had to say about the big win:

“This is a team victory. My teammates did an amazing job all day working together – all the Toyotas. This is a proud moment for everyone at Toyota. This wouldn’t be possible if this wasn’t Toyotas sticking together all race long. We were able to get up, capture our track position. This is amazing for Toyota.”

The 2016 season is Toyota’s tenth season competing in the Sprint Cup Series, which is NASCAR’s top level. The automaker has won in 80 events since it became a part of the series in 2007. Toyota looks forward to this season and its future competing in the NSCS.
