Buyers of the 2020 Toyota Highlander have two powertrain choices: a gasoline 3.5-liter V6 engine and the Toyota Hybrid System. The 3.5-liter V6 engine doles out 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to the Direct Shift 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Toyota Hybrid System in the Highlander Hybrid combines two electric motors with a 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine. It delivers a total system output of 240 horsepower and an estimated combined fuel economy of 34 mpg, which is a 6 mpg increase over the previous-generation model. The four-cylinder engine and electric motors are paired with the Electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT).
